Health Canada advises against disturbing or removing suspected asbestos yourself. Intact material that is undisturbed and isolated from indoor air presents a different situation from damaged material or renovation dust. Keep the work area undisturbed while a qualified professional assesses it.

Ask for an assessment with a defined scope

Tell the assessor which materials and rooms will be affected by the planned work. Ask whether sampling is appropriate, who will collect it, which laboratory will analyze it, and what areas remain untested. Do not treat a negative sample from one location as clearance for every material in the house.

Make the purchase decision with actual evidence

Request prior assessment, abatement and clearance records. Obtain a scoped quote where work is recommended and discuss financing, insurance and contract implications with the relevant professionals. A generic online remediation allowance cannot price the specific scope.
